On November 11th in the United States people celebrate
Veterans Day, a commemorative day that honors people who have served in the
U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans.
It’s celebrated since 1919 when the president Woodrow Wilson first
proclaimed Armistice Day for November 11 that will be filled with a solemn
pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service to free the
Country.
But was until 1945 that World War II veteran Raymond Weeks had the
idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died
in World War I.
Because it’s a federal holiday, we don’t have class at the UW and I
see that some workers and many students get the day off. It’s really nice to
see how Americans are proud of their heroes and they celebrate them, with
patriotism, with flags everywhere, just celebrating the person who gave them
the freedom of the United States.
